Over the past few years – the number and severity of storms throughout the Country seems to be increasing. One of the major factors affecting insurance right now isn’t only the number of storms, it’s the cost to repair property afterwards. All of this is leading to higher rates, higher deductibles and fewer carriers willing to insure property in certain areas of the country. But what can you do to minimize your risk? Below are a few items that will help you better weather the storm:
- Trim or remove trees and brush near or overhanging your home, outbuildings or other structures to prevent damage from high winds
- Remove trees from your property that are damaged or diseased
- Consider purchasing a home generator to preserve power during and after storms
- Have a storm readiness kit with matches, candles, flashlights and a backup power source for your cell phone
- Make sure water doesn’t pool around your home, update gutters and downspouts to remove water from your foundation
- Keep vehicles parked in your garage or in a protected area to avoid hail, wind and other storm damage
These are just a few ideas that can help keep your home and property from storm damage and your premiums low. Call us any time with questions about claims or to review your policy!
